In Men With Missing Parts: Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz, I perform live as L. Frank Baum from a script created from excerpts of Baum’s myriad books and projects (including The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays), as well as spinoffs such as The Wiz. Each act is introduced by live narration, interspersed with magic lantern slides and short reenacted fairylogue videos. The score is comprised of original material and Diana Ross’s greatest hits sung live to music performed by a full band. Invoking Diana Ross, who played Dorothy in The Wiz and is a transgender icon, underscores a queer narrative of the “friends of Dorothy.” Men With Missing Parts will revisit and flesh out the feminist thread present in the Oz series, expanding these themes to challenge the concept of the leading man as well as the governing principle of gender itself—the binary. As a send-up of the fantastical “realness” in Oz, the leading roles (Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion) are performed by two transgendered people, within a queer, transfeminist context. With irreverent gaiety, the foursome cruise the yellow brick road in search of integrity only to find that they already possess what they most fervently desire.
